Photo Story

After reviewing numerous photo stories created throughout the 20th and 21st centuries, I was inspired to create this story about a friend of mine who has faced an uphill battle in higher education.

“Most people are at least vaguely aware of the struggles that today’s college students are facing, whether they be financial, familial, or otherwise. Media outlets report on these issues, but the faceless statistics they provide can never adequately portray the everyday battles required to succeed in higher education, especially when the odds are stacked against you. My project, Life Happens, will focus on giving a real face to this global issue.

Kassandra (Kassie) Foss began her college career as a nursing major at the University of Maine in Fort Kent. With little financial support from her family, and two younger sisters and a grandfather relying on her, she made the difficult decision to transfer to Eastern Maine Community College to avoid the ever-growing debt and be closer to her home in Hermon. Now attending classes, as well as working two jobs and occasionally substitute teaching, Kassandra finds herself with little time to think about anything beyond the immediate future.”
